Telluride - Things to do in the Winter

Snowmobile Adventures

While cruising through white-blanketed meadows and forests, soaking up amazing views as you go, you'll have the opportunity to take a firsthand look at what established Telluride in the first place: mining. Dave's Snowmobile Tours and Telluride Snowmobile Adventures offer guests a glimpse of Telluride's mining legacy while traveling over mountain passes and through deserted ghost towns. The historic ghost town of Alta Lakes is a favorite destination among guests. After exploring Alta's old mining sites, enjoy a catered lunch at the Alta Lakes Observatory, a quaint log and stone cabin nestled in the woods.

San Juan Outdoor School

Telluride's premier source for mountain adventures, the San Juan Outdoor School offers adventures in rock climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, nature hiking, backpacking, backcountry skiing, avalanche education, and snowshoeing. With the guidance of expert instructors and naturalists, participants in our programs gain an appreciation for the rich natural and cultural history of Telluride's majestic San Juan Mountains. The San Juan Outdoor School provides the industry's highest quality instruction in a supportive learning environment and creates a nurturing and comfortable outdoor experience for people of all ages and abilities. The San Juan Outdoor School, LLC is a fully insured USDA Forest Service permitted outfitter operating in partnership with the non-profit San Juan Field School.

Ice Skating

It's the classic winter setting. With a crackling fire to keep you warm, and gorgeous starlit night above, you skate across the glassy ice without a care in the world. Telluridians remember that setting, and the tradition lives on in both historic Telluride and Mountain Village. There's just something about the nighttime, the nip in the air and the warmth of a cup of hot cocoa that gets us.

Skaters waltz by day and night in Telluride Town Park or in Mountain Village. The Town provides a warming hut with a fireplace for toasty toes, while the Mountain Village pond plays seasonal music under the stars.

Glider Rides

Getting air is the obvious goal for many snow riders, but how about gliding through the air hundreds of feet above the slopes in a glider plane, with only the wind thermals to keep you afloat. Telluride Soaring offers thrills galore with exhilarating sailplane rides throughout the winter from the Telluride Airport.

Horseback Riding

Guests who prefer cowboy boots to ski boots should visit Telluride's favorite cowboy Roudy Roudebush at Telluride Horseback.

Dog Sledding

With a dozen dashing sled dogs in the lead, guests can experience a true Alaskan adventure right here in Telluride. Half-day, full-day and overnight sled dog trips are offered through Winter Moon Sled Dog Adventures.
